Eva Jeske
*1990 in Freudenberg, GER
Resides and works in Cologne, GER
Jeske creates abstract paintings that are characterized by their extreme dynamism, rhythmic complexity, volume and energy as well as by their minimalism and concentration. She works mainly on paper and canvas, but also experiments with non-traditional painting surfaces such as drum skins or slide projector frames. When applying the paint, preferably with ink and acrylic paints, she does not limit herself to brushes, but also uses unconventional tools and advanced techniques. Her practice is based on creating art in a state of non-thinking, non-judgment, completely in the present moment. She relies on her intuition and trust in her body and unconscious decision-making processes. Her artworks arise from curiosity and a deep interest in the materials used, rather than pursuing a set goal. While this openness is key to her practice, this doesn´t mean that the outcome is arbitrary. She is interested in epistemological and aesthetic questions about human experiences and knowledge capacities. This finds its expression in exploring, analyzing, differentiating and questioning the boundary between sound and image. Alongside her paintings and drawings this research has been presented in performances, installations and written works, such as the interactive book ART.IS.-, a collaboration with the Dutch musician Etienne Nillesen, published in 2019. She has collaborated on this topic with Ensemble TON, Ensemble Bonecrusher, Ensemble BRuCH, musicians such as Claudia Chan, Barbara Schachtner, Nicola L. Hein and composers such as Eduardo Loría and Viola Yip.
