Paint Memories
Sound-Installation (2022)
For 8-channel live electronics and a painting.
Thu – Sud, June  23rd – 25th, 2022
At ZKM kleines Studio
Lorenzstraße 19

76135 Karlsruhe
Germany
A collaboration with the composer Eduardo Loría. We are both interested in the perception and representation of what normally remains hidden. Here we enter into a very close connection between sound and image that receives little attention: The sounds that emerge while painting, which have their own musical potential. In this way, we enable the visitors to reflect on the sonic aspect of the paintings and to perceive it in the paintings themselves. In addition, the sound in the installative context also becomes recognisable in its expanded potential as space. Instead of the usual time sequence of a piece, the sound opens up a space through which the visitors can walk, into which they can immerse themselves. Time, as we know it, no longer plays a role here, the visitors can simultaneously perceive the past (the sound here becomes a memory of the genesis of the paintings) and the present of the painting.

I will keep drawing circles until it becomes a picture
Concert and exhibition
May 28th 2022, Kunst-Station Sankt Peter in Cologne/ 8pm
A collaboration between Viola Yip & Etienne Nillesen
“i will keep drawing circles until it becomes a picture” is an installative composition and performance for an electronically augmented snare drum and spatially distributed quadraphonic snare drum speakers.

They hired me to create the painting for their project which was then exhibited at Kunst-Station Sankt Peter on the day of the performance!

Supported by Musikfonds e.V. with project funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media as part of the special programme Neustart Kultur.

Music release ART.IS.∙

ART.IS.∙ the book + the music is available now!

You can get the book and/or the music HERE

Every book contains a downloadcode and I would recommend getting the book to get the full experience but you can also get the music only!

The music:
solo extended snare drum
The album is Etienne Nillesen playing to 8 different themes that are also interpreted visually by me in the ART.IS.∙ book. Every piece Etienne has recorded can be seen/ heard like a little statue. The music doesn’t have a common musical form and for the most part doesn’t even have a development that you would expect in music. The music is very static. This creates the possibility to look/listen to it more deeply, see/hear it from different angles, walk around it with your ears, and discover different movements, layers, depth, colors, structures and details.

“The Sound and the Unsound: a quest for the ontology of music” explores the intersection
between audiovisual perception and musical imagination. The Project originates in the music-philosophical question about the nature and material-boundness of music, asks where the ontology of music lies in our music making. The artists construct and compose a music that occurs in the
medium of sound and in the medium of light/shadow. The focus is on the independent musical qualities of the media, as well as their negating and affirmative dialectics.

Summer is here! What gets better than having some food and drinks outside over sunset, in company with some curious musical minds before the performance starts!?
